Update : iPad 3G is hackable like iPad Wifi

The iPad 3G models begin to reach lucky US customers in serious quantities today - and the iPhone Dev Team are standing ready with software to jailbreak Apple’s device.

“At some point after (don’t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers’ hands, the first “userland” jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex,” the Dev Team write on the blog. “It’s called “Spirit” and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release on April 3.” (We’ve posted the video above).

They warn the jailbreak is unlikely to be available for long, “Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners,” the advise. And while that’s good in the sense that Apple can then act to secure any unpatched holes, it is bad for people taking a risk to jailbreak their devices.

“One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day,” the hackers advise.

The jailbreak also works on the iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. However, even the developers warn that non tech-savvy users should avoid jailbreaking their devices, and we’d like to observe that jailbreaking voids your warranty and can have unintended consequences on your device. It is purely at your own risk.

Well, as predicted, release of Spirit is just around the corner. Earlier today Comex replied a question regarding  “spirit jailbreak release date” answering “Friday”. Needles to mention, Spirit is an all in one jailbreak solution for iPhone 2G / 3G / 3GS, iPad WiFi / iPad 3G, and iPod Touch 1G / 2G / 3G.

For those who are interested in jailbreaking their iPad / iPhone / iPod should stay away from iTunes 9.1.1 since iTunes can detect & remove it.
