As we’ve speculated over the last few days, iOS 4.3.4 made its debut on iTunes. The new release, without clear release notes, addresses the PDF exploit in Mobile Safari used by JailbreakMe.


The release notes aren’t clear, only alleging "security fixes", although we can confirm that JailbreakMe 3.0 doesn’t work in this release. Blocking this untethered jailbreak was Apple’s only goal with this release.

Any device supported by iOS 4.3, namely the 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch, the iPhone 3GS , the iPhone 4 and the iPad. While Apple clearly hadn’t planned for this release in advance, circumstances forced it: with such an important threat in the wild, not only allowing for a jailbreak, which in and of itself Apple dislikes, but also open up a huge breach that could lead unsuspecting users to have malware loaded onto their devices.

JailbreakMe 3.0 is a jailbreaking solution that allows devices to be hacked without a computer, just by pointing Mobile Safari to a JailbreakMe’s website. A pre-released version of this tool was leaked over the weekend, providing an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 for the first time ever before the final official release was made last week. Consequently, Apple began working on iOS 4.3.4 to address this issue.
It should be needless to say that if you’ve jailbroken or are planning to jailbreak your iPad 2 using JailbreakMe, stay away from this update and install PDF Patcher 2 from Cydia instead, which provides the same benefits as this update, plus it won’t break your jailbreak.. Most users might as well just wait for iOS 5, which should come out sometime in the Fall.

In order to install this update, connect your phone to your computer and launch iTunes, if it hasn’t launched automatically. From there, select your device from the sidebar, click on "Check for Updates" and select "Download and Install" when prompted. After a rather large download, your device should begin to update.

After you’ve downloaded your device’s respective firmware, you can install the software manually by launching iTunes, locating your device on the sidebar and pressing "Restore" while holding the Shift key on Windows and Alt on the Mac.

Update 1: Apple has now published a support document, confirming that PDF exploit exposed by JailbreakMe 3.0 has been fixed.

Now before anyone gets all upperty and tries to tell me that games are too expensive, and people just can’t afford a $60 game – let me relay a story told by TechCrunch.
The story revolves around one independent iOS developer, going by the name of GAMEized.
All excited like, GAMEized released its new game, FingerKicks (a nice little football game, for those interested) into Apple’s cavernous App Store and proceeded to sit back and wait for their fortune to be made.
One problem though – according to Apple’s own numbers, just $97-worth of sales were made on the game’s first day, with sales continuing to drop after that.
Not convinced Apple’s numbers were right, the guys at GAMEized fired up their trusty iDevice and decided to take a look at Game Center rankings. Imagine their joy when they saw 5000 players, apparently playing their $0.99 game. They wouldn’t retire off the money, but it’s money worth having nonetheless.
Fast forward to pay day, when Apple releases its official sales numbers. How many copies had actually been sold? Just 160 that weekend. Odd, no?
Well, yes and no.
After a little digging, they discovered their new app was (un)fortunate enough to be a featured app on AppTrackr, part of the cracked iOS app scene.
Part of Hackulo.us, AppTrackr had basically offered up a free version of the app GAMEzine was trying to sell for $0.99. How does a developer compete with that?
GAMEized, understandably, aren’t impressed.

“Apple apparently has no functional counter-piracy safeguards in place on their Game Center – essentially permitting users to play pirated software on their Game Center without any fear of reprisals or consequence,”

In a further release, it’s clear they are fans of the iOS platform, it’s just a shame it appears to be suffering a little-reported piracy problem.

GAMEized loves Apple. As application developers, we invest enthusiastically in Apple’s tools and methodologies. We buy and use Apple’s machines, their peripherals and their accessories almost exclusively. When we decided to build FingerKicks, it was a foregone conclusion we would build it exclusively for the iOS and available only through Apple’s AppStore.
Apple has yet to reciprocate our devotion to them.

While there isn’t much to add to this story, what we will say is this: why, dear pirates, must you see the need to rip off a $0.99 app? Really, if that $0.99 is too much for you to pay for someone’s hard work, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your buying of smartphones, tablets and the like that cost hundreds of dollars. You’ll spend $499 on an iPad, but not $0.99 on a game to play on it?
Worryingly, we fear it’s becoming socially acceptable to steal games and apps, especially on smartphones. Perhaps a low price means a perceived lack of value, hence the willingness to steal the app in question?
We really aren’t sure, but we do know one thing – if we as a community continue to bite the hand that feeds us, these great developers will take their great apps, and go somewhere else.

JailbreakMe 3.0 has received an "essential upgrade" via Cydia today, allegedly fixing previous issues that caused Apple’s Camera Connection Kit accessory, BiteSMS, and sometimes Cydia (disappearing problem) to stop working altogether. Every iOS user who has jailbroken their device with JailbreakMe 3.0 is encouraged to apply this update via Cydia as soon as possible.

We haven’t tested whether Apple’s Camera Connector Kit accessory is working with this update yet. So if you have tried it and it has worked, do let us know. For those who are not aware, the Camera Connector is a hardware add-on available exclusively for the iPad that lets users transfer images from their digital camera or SD card to the iPad’s built-in picture library. The accessory, which plugs right into the iPad’s dock connector, is available for $29 right off from Apple’s Online Store.
JailbreakMe 3.0, which was officially released less than a week ago, was reported to have been used 1 million times within 1 day after being released, before reaching as many as 2 million jailbreaks over the weekend. These estimates aren’t even counting the jailbreaks that were applied using an unofficial pre-release version which leaked several days earlier.
This jailbreaking method has stood out from all others since it’s the easiest way to apply a jailbreak on any iOS device and is the first untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2, a device that many iPhone developers had been trying to hack into for months before JailbreakMe 3.0 came out. Jailbreaking a device using JailbreakMe 3.0 is so easy that a 5-year-old could do it: all a user needs to do is to point Mobile Safari to JailbreakMe.com and follow the on-screen instructions which include downloading a crafted PDF file that will patch the system and load Cydia onto it. The Safari vulnerability that allows this to happen is reportedly already being fixed by Apple, with the next point release of iOS 4.x, known as iOS 4.3.4. Users are warned to stay away from this release if they have or are planning to jailbreak their devices using JailbreakMe. Instead, users should perform the jailbreak, if they haven’t already, and install PDF Patcher 2 from Cydia in order to fix this nasty vulnerability while still preserving all the benefits of owning a jailbroken device.

Split Keyboard – It Moves!

This video is a little obnoxious in that YouTube V-Blog shaky self-documentary style, but it shows a neat feature of the split keyboard… it moves! The video shows you can split and rejoin the keyboard, plus move it around anywhere on the screen, making it more comfortable for anyone to type with.

iOS 5 Beta Features as seen on the iPad 2

OK so technically this is the 9th video on this page, which is fitting because its from 9to5mac… anyway this is a 10 minute walkthrough of the new beta iOS 5 features as seen from an iPad 2:

It has now been confirmed that Apple is planning to release iOS 4.3.4 to fix a PDF Exploit that allowed JailbreakMe 3.0 to be applied. This vulnerability in Mobile Safari requires users to open a malicious PDF file before having the device taken over and ultimately jailbroken in JailbreakMe 3.0’s case.

After days of speculation, a post by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security confirms the seriousness of the risks and alluded to an nonexistent “software update” that will likely come under the form of iOS 4.3.4, scheduled to be available within the next few days. According to the post on the Government site, this PDF vulnerability allows “attackers to access with administrative privileges on the entire system”.

The post goes on to explain the possible consequences of this exploit if it’s left unpatched, including the possibility for confidential information to be accessed, given the significant market share iOS has managed to obtain in the business world, as ReadWriteWeb explains:

According to a Google translation of the German Federal Office for Information Security, the exploit will give the attacker administrative privileges over devices which would include any data, email or contacts stored on the device. So far there is no official patch available for the exploit from Apple. But if you have jailbroken your iOS device, there is a patch available through Cydia.

Until the update is released, the German Government urges users to think twice before opening PDF files from unknown sources or clicking on untrusted links in search engines.
Apple has taken things a bit seriously and a spokesperson from Apple has confirmed that an update is on its way to patch the PDF vulnerability, but no time frame has been given when the update will drop on earth.
